Porsche Boxster & Cayman Repair & Service

Porsche Cayman engine service at Autos of Europe, Manchester MO

Porsche Boxster and Cayman Repair and Service in St. Louis

Porsche's mid-engine cars are some of the purest drivers' cars ever built, and some of the most rewarding Porsches to own. They also have their own quirks. The engine sits under a panel behind the seats, a lot of routine work takes more access than you'd expect, and early cars share the IMS bearing concern with the 996 911.

At Autos of Europe in Manchester, we've serviced every generation of Boxster and Cayman, from the original 986 to today's 718 GT4 and Spyder, and we know exactly where to look. Whether your car is a weekend convertible, a daily driver or a track-day weapon, we'll keep it healthy with Porsche procedures and factory-level diagnostics. These cars are part of our complete Porsche repair and service for St. Louis and West County.

We'll help you keep it that way for years to come. Book online or call, and we'll take it from there.

Top Reviews From Happy Vehicle Owners

986 Boxster and 987 Boxster and Cayman (1997–2012)

986 Boxster (1997–2004)

The original Boxster, and today an affordable way into Porsche ownership. Its M96 engine means the IMS bearing, rear main seal and air-oil separator are the main items to watch. Convertible tops, plastic rear windows, coolant expansion tanks and front radiators clogged with debris are also common age-related repairs. We explain each on our common Porsche repairs page.

987 Boxster (2005–2012) and Cayman (2006–2012)

  • 987.1 (2005–2008): Still the M96/M97 engine family, so IMS awareness is key. On many of these cars the bearing is the larger, non-serviceable type, so oil-filter inspection at every oil change matters.
  • 987.2 (2009–2012): The new 9A1 engine dropped the IMS bearing, and PDK became available. Many enthusiasts see the 987.2 Cayman S and Boxster S as a sweet spot, and they're a popular pre-purchase inspection request at our shop.

981 and 718 Boxster and Cayman (2013–Present)

981 Boxster (2013–2016) and Cayman (2014–2016)

Lighter, stiffer and more refined, with naturally aspirated flat-six engines. These are durable cars. We mostly see scheduled maintenance, PDK service, brakes, cooling system parts and the occasional electrical gremlin.

718 Boxster and 718 Cayman (2017–Present)

The 718 brought turbocharged four-cylinder engines to the base, S and original GTS models, before a 4.0 liter flat-six returned in the GTS 4.0, Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder. Turbo models add boost and charge-air checks to the list, and the GT cars need track-focused care. Most 718 work is scheduled maintenance and diagnostics using factory-level Porsche equipment, and warranty-period maintenance with us is fully protected. See what's due on our Porsche maintenance schedule.

If you drive your 718 hard or take it to the track, plan on more frequent brake fluid, tire and alignment checks. We'll tailor the schedule to how you actually use the car rather than relying only on the service indicator, and we'll check for any software updates or campaigns that apply while it's with us.

Boxster and Cayman Services We Offer

  • Oil services and scheduled maintenance
  • IMS bearing, rear main seal and clutch packages for 986 and 987.1 cars
  • Air-oil separator replacement
  • Cooling system repairs: radiators, expansion tanks and water pumps
  • Convertible top hydraulics and mechanism repair
  • PDK fluid service and clutch adaptations
  • Brakes, suspension and alignment for street and track
  • Track preparation for GT4, Spyder and GTS 4.0 models
  • Pre-purchase inspections with engine over-rev reports

Owners of earlier cars often ask where to start. On a 986 or 987.1, we usually suggest a baseline inspection: an oil service with a filter inspection, a scan for stored faults, a coolant system check and a look at the convertible top, hydraulics and drains. From there, we'll put together a prioritized plan, starting with the items that protect the engine, so you can spread larger jobs like an IMS bearing and clutch package over time. On later 981 and 718 cars, most visits are straightforward scheduled maintenance. Whatever the job, you'll get a written estimate before we begin.

Why Mid-Engine Work Needs a Specialist

On a Boxster or Cayman, jobs that are simple on other cars, such as spark plugs, drive belts and some sensors, mean working through access panels or removing trim and components. A shop that doesn't do this every week can damage clips, panels and connectors, or skip steps entirely.

Our technicians know the access routes and the right order to do things, which saves labor time and protects your car. That experience matters most on the bigger jobs: an IMS bearing, clutch and rear main seal package on a 986 or 987.1 is routine work for us, not a learning exercise. If you also own a Porsche 911, you'll find the same specialist care applies across the lineup.

Knowing these cars also means knowing where problems hide. We routinely check for clogged front radiators, leaking convertible top hydraulics and blocked drains, which are easy to miss and expensive to ignore.

Porsche Boxster and Cayman Service FAQs

  • Which Boxster and Cayman years have the IMS bearing?

The 986 Boxster (1997–2004) and the 987.1 Boxster and Cayman (2005–2008). Every model from 2009 on, starting with the 987.2, uses an engine without an IMS bearing.
  • How much does a Boxster IMS bearing replacement cost?

It depends on the year and whether the clutch and rear main seal are replaced at the same time, which we usually recommend. We'll give you a written estimate after inspecting the car.
  • Is the 718 four-cylinder engine reliable?

Yes. The 718's turbocharged four-cylinder engines have proven durable with proper maintenance. Stay on top of oil services and spark plugs, and have any boost-related warnings diagnosed promptly.
  • Do you service the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder?

Yes. We service the GT4, Spyder and GTS 4.0, including maintenance, brakes, alignment and track preparation.
